California Music Academy
California Music Academy is the leading music school for children in Simi Valley. Our music education program focuses on the most popular musical instruments: Piano, Singing, and Guitar.
For almost 20 years, we ran the largest and oldest “brick and mortar” music school. However, to ensure the safety of our students in the Covid-19 era, we have transitioned to private In-Home lessons and Live Virtual lessons. We continue to focus on serving the Conejo Valley community, including Calabasas, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, Oak Park, and Newbury Park.

We offer piano lessons for students of all ages and abilities, from beginners to very advanced students. We offer piano lessons in every style, from classical to jazz to pop. We have students who want to play just for fun and want to become professional musicians. As we have so many piano teachers on staff, we can match students with a teacher that works best with their particular age, ability, and interest. We start piano lessons at any age from age three onward. Our private piano lessons are one-on-one instruction and lesson lengths are 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 1 hour. For our advanced piano students, we have concert-level teachers who can prepare them for university entrance, competitions, and auditions.
Many students take singing lessons either by themselves or simultaneously with instrumental music lessons. Students sing all kinds of music, from their favorite artists to classical arias. Our voice teachers have university training in music, specializing in voice, and sing everything from pop and jazz to opera. Our teachers all have performance backgrounds as well. Just a sample of what a student will learn in singing lessons includes how to breathe properly, how to increase their range, proper pitch, how to project, and stage presence. We provide a professional accompanist who rehearses with the students and plays for them at the recitals. Our private, one-on-one voice lesson lengths are 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 1 hour.
Our guitar lessons include acoustic, electric, and bass guitar. We have an excellent guitar teaching staff and teach guitar lessons in many styles, including rock to jazz, classical, pop, Spanish, and chording. Our teachers perform in bands, work in recording studios, or are active composers. Our guitar teachers have university music degrees, so they know how to teach the proper theory and technique, regardless of whether a student is interested in metal or classical. Typically, a student would be six years old before starting guitar lessons due to their hand size, but some younger students start with a junior-sized guitar. Thirty minutes, 45 minutes, or an hour can be allocated for our one-on-one private guitar lessons.
Many of our students take piano & Singing Mixed lessons. Such lessons are very effective in keeping students engaged and motivated. We start Piano and Singing mixed lessons at age 5 onward. Beginners usually take 30-minute lessons while intermediate and advanced students take 45-minutes or 1-hour lessons.
some of our students take guitar & Singing Mixed lessons. Such lessons are not for everyone, because they tend to be challenging especially for beginners and younger students. We start Guitar and Singing mixed lessons at age 8 onward. Beginners usually take 30-minute lessons while intermediate and advanced students take 45-minutes or 1-hour lessons.
Our Saxophone, Clarinet or flute lessons are aimed at highly motivated and committed students. Such instruments require a substantial initial investment and require relatively long daily practice. We have an excellent woodwind staff that can teach lessons in many styles including rock, pop, jazz, classical, and improvisation. All of our teachers perform in bands, work in recording studios or are active composers. woodwind instruction is one-on-one and lesson lengths are 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 1 hour.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned artist looking for guidance, we can help unlock your musical voice through songwriting and composition.
You will learn:
Our Songwriting/Composition lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes
We offer a wide variety of drum lessons or percussion lessons. Most of our students learn on drum kit. We have both male and female students and typically do not start drum lessons before the age 8 as students need to be able to reach both the pedal and the cymbals. We do have some younger students but suggest they come in for a trial drum lesson to see if they are big enough to get started. Drum lessons are taught on a drum kit in our studios but students can get started practicing at home on practice pads before purchasing or renting a drum kit. Our drums lessons stress proper technique so students become good drummers quickly. Our drum instructors have university or college training and are active performers. Private drum lessons are available in 30 minute, 45 minute and 1-hour lengths.
Lena Gold, Music Director
Piano & Voice Teacher
Lena Gold founded California Music Academy 17 years ago, following many years of a successful career as a performing musician worldwide.
Teaching music to children started as a hobby and turned into a visionary service that enriched the lives of thousands of children and their families.
Lena has been happily married for 30 years and has five children. Surprisingly, all five of them agreed to follow their mom’s advice and ended up playing multiple instruments just for the fun of it.
Lena is proud that although none of them became professional musicians, they all benefited tremendously from the intellectual and personal confidence that is associated with learning music for years. Her children ended up attending top colleges such as the University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University, UC Berkeley, and NYU Law and are now enjoying playing music in their free time.
At the Music Academy, Lena has developed an amazing team of talented music teachers devoted to spreading their knowledge and love of music to the next generation. Lena is teaching at the Music Academy in Westlake Village and is personally involved in developing the studio’s curriculum along with her team members.
